Comunicação Cinética 1967

This delicate construction is Comunicação Cinética by Abraham Palatnik. With simple materials, he creates something that almost dances. The dark brown and light blues pop against a white, light-filled background. It looks like a painting but in three dimensions. Palatnik gives us hard and soft, light and dark all at once. At the heart of the piece is a series of metal rods, precisely arranged. From these rods radiate colored discs. Each element seems carefully balanced. I'm drawn to the large dark oval at the very top, like a full stop hovering mid-air. This piece reminds me of Calder’s mobiles, yet it's distinctly Palatnik. I love the way he embraced movement and transformed simple materials into a thing of beauty. Art is all about this kind of dialogue and transformation, isn't it? There is no right or wrong answer, only the endless push and pull of possibility.
