Curatorial notes
Carel Adolph Lion Cachet created the artwork ‘Tak met jonge loten’ using aquatint. Cachet was a Dutch artist, who lived through a tumultuous period marked by shifting social and political landscapes. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, ideas about national identity and cultural heritage were being heavily discussed. In this print we see Cachet engaging with the natural world, and perhaps imbuing it with symbolic meaning related to growth and renewal. The print shows a branch with young shoots. The way that light and shadow play across the leaves evokes a sense of vitality. Cachet seems to be positioning nature as a source of resilience and continuity. As you look at the print, consider the themes of identity, heritage, and the relationship between humanity and nature. Notice the emotional and personal connection that Cachet seems to have with his subject matter.
