Ali Omar Ermes made this work, Al-Khaa Al-Ashhab, using ink and paper. Ermes doesn't simply paint with ink, he wields it, harnessing its fluidity to create sweeping calligraphic forms. The density of the ink is also essential. Notice how its thickness gives weight and presence to the strokes. Ermes's mark-making has both structure and freedom. The intentionality and precision in the brushstrokes required a background in traditional Islamic calligraphy, a discipline demanding years of patient study. Yet, Ermes also uses these learnt skills to move beyond this tradition, creating a contemporary visual language. Ermes's work elevates calligraphy from utilitarian communication to high art. By appreciating the artistry and skill involved, we recognize that Al-Khaa Al-Ashhab offers a profound meditation on language, heritage, and the power of the handmade in a rapidly changing world.
