Editor: This X-radiograph of Rembrandt's "Double Portrait" reveals so much about the artistic process. It almost looks like a ghostly image beneath the surface. What can we learn from this hidden view? Curator: Consider the physical reality of the painting. We're seeing the density of materials, the lead white pigment especially popping. Think about Rembrandt's workshop: grinding pigments, layering paint. How does understanding those labor-intensive processes change our appreciation?
