Curatorial notes
"Figuur in zevenkantige lijst," or "Figure in Heptagonal Frame," was created by Giulio Romano, around the 1500s using pen and brown ink. During the High Renaissance, artists like Romano were deeply influenced by classical antiquity, but this drawing diverges from the period's idealized forms. There's an intimacy to this sketch, a raw emotionality in the figure's posture, set against the formality of the frame. The lines are tentative, the form unresolved. The gaze is direct, even confrontational. What's particularly striking is how the drawing resists traditional gender norms. The figure's androgynous appearance challenges Renaissance ideals of beauty and gender. The sketch feels like a glimpse into a private moment, a space where identity is fluid and not yet defined. Its emotional honesty allows us to consider the complexities of identity, representation, and the artist's own negotiations with the classical and social expectations of the time.
