Oskar Holweck made this piece, 14 IX 59, on September 14th 1959. Just look at this image, it feels so immediate. It is as though he has just flung marks onto the page. I imagine him standing there and doing it in one go, because there is such a sense of flow and movement. It looks effortless, but it is anything but. The top of the piece is a cluster of black dots that fall into these long, thin, wispy lines, like rain coming down. The marks are so delicate and fragile, yet together, they create this powerful statement. The lines vary in thickness and darkness, and some of them fade away as they reach the bottom of the page. I am reminded of Cy Twombly, but this is more controlled. Holweck has managed to create something that is both chaotic and orderly at the same time. You can see how art making is an ongoing dialogue between artists. What a conversation.
