This photograph of Giuseppe Verdi was made by an anonymous artist and, like so many portraits, we’re left to wonder, what’s behind the pose? The greyscale palette, ranging from stark whites to charcoal blacks, gives the image a timeless feel, like a drawing from a book. It’s cool to see how the light catches the edges of Verdi’s face, especially around his beard, creating a kind of soft halo effect. Focusing on the lower part of the image, see where the shadows pool around his suit? The darkness there gives the image an anchor, and throws the soft light on his face into sharper relief. The slightly faded look of the print makes me think about the passage of time and the way that even famous faces eventually become part of history. It’s a reminder that art, in any form, is really an ongoing conversation across generations.
