Andre Bauchant made "Blumen in Landschaft" in 1928, though its materials are not specified, I would assume paint on canvas. The way the flowers are built from small, careful dabs of pigment, it feels like the making of it was a soothing, almost meditative process. Look at that vase. It’s got this kind of lumpy, organic quality, almost like a root vegetable that has sprouted three necks to present these generous bunches of flowers. It reminds me of some of Alfred Jarry’s bizarre illustrations. The whole composition feels both intentionally composed and slightly awkward. The way the flowers frame the central scene, it’s like looking through a portal into a dream. Bauchant, a self-taught artist, often painted idyllic scenes inspired by his love of nature and classical mythology. He shared a certain sensibility with Henri Rousseau, another painter who managed to evoke a unique dream world through his art. Both artists remind us that art doesn’t always have to strive for realism; it can be a space for imagination and personal vision to blossom.
