This landscape with a blue border by Harrie A. Gerritz, looks like it was made with pencil and paint on paper. I can imagine Gerritz making this, starting with a vertical blue stripe, kind of off-center. I wonder if it came out of a mistake? Then adding two cows, one on either side of the blue, like he’s dividing a territory. The one on the left is down on all fours, eating or something, and the one on the right is stood up, and maybe calling out. They're drawn with very simple lines. It all feels a bit like folk art but with a modernist twist. You know, it makes me think about how artists are always in conversation with each other, across time. Gerritz is inspired by other painters, but he's also doing his own thing, which is what makes his work so special. It feels like he's just playing. And that playful ambiguity opens up the possibility for so many readings and interpretations.
