Flaminio Innocenzo Minozzi created this pen and watercolor wash on paper, “Description of a Plan with Three Figures and Divan Below,” sometime in the late 18th century. Minozzi, an Italian architect and designer, worked during a period of significant social change, as Enlightenment ideals began to challenge traditional aristocratic power. The drawing presents an architectural design accompanied by a lengthy description in Italian, revealing how much architectural design was rooted in scholarly discourse. However, it is the three figures surrounding a divan that capture our attention, their interactions suggesting a narrative beyond mere functionality. These figures, dressed in what seems to be classical garb, prompt questions about identity and representation. The divan itself, elaborately decorated, invites consideration of class and luxury. What does it mean to display such opulence amid growing social unrest? Minozzi’s work encourages us to consider not just the aesthetics of design, but also the stories and social contexts embedded within.
