Editor: This print by Gerd Winner depicts a looming brick wall alongside a road, and although it is untitled, it feels incredibly imposing and somber. What do you see in this piece? Curator: This image evokes the weight of history, doesn’t it? Walls are potent symbols. They represent division, constraint, but also protection. Consider the Berlin Wall, physically and ideologically separating East and West. Does the anonymity here amplify a sense of universal confinement? Editor: I hadn't considered the Berlin Wall connection, but that adds so much depth. I initially just saw a very bleak, almost sterile, landscape. Curator: Perhaps Winner is prompting us to reflect on what we choose to wall ourselves off from, or what walls others erect around us. This piece lingers in the mind, offering no easy answers, only questions.
