This drawing of an ambiguous figure was made by Hans Bellmer, but we don't know when. I can only imagine the process of creating this image, the shifting and emerging of the figure, and the trial and error that must have taken place. I sympathize with the artist. What was he thinking as he drew this? The textures of the fabric and hair, the lines that build up the volume of the bodies, the way the face seems to be obscured. The gestures communicate a feeling of being trapped or of hiding, almost as if the figure is ashamed. I think of other artists who draw bodies in fragmented ways. Bellmer's dolls were a big influence on many artists. When we look at this drawing, we are in an ongoing conversation with Bellmer, across time. Artists like him inspire our creativity. Painting and drawing are forms of expression that embrace ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations. What do you see?
