Pieter van der Borcht made this engraving of ‘Abrahams ontmoeting met Melchisedek’ using metal plates and etching tools. The intricate lines and patterns demonstrate the skilled craftsmanship required to produce detailed images. The textures of the landscape, the folds of the clothing, and the expressions on the figures' faces are rendered with remarkable precision. The image is one of industry as the men carry jars and baskets, bringing materials to a town in the distance. A never ending line of spear holding soldiers on the left of the print, are indicators of war. Engraving was a highly specialized craft in the 16th century. These prints were often commissioned by wealthy patrons. The artistry was a means of disseminating information and reinforcing social hierarchies.
