Patrick Heron composed this silkscreen, titled "January 1973: 11" using flat areas of pure colour. But what do they signify? Consider, the evocative power of colour; the vibrant red, traditionally associated with passion and vitality, pulsates with the life-force. It is a symbol that transcends time. We can see its earliest roots in Paleolithic cave paintings that depict hunting scenes with the colour red. A similar visceral urgency reappears in Renaissance art, where red robes signified power and status. It then transcends into a contemporary abstract form, retaining its primal energetic charge. The colour blue, evoking serenity and contemplation, provides a counterbalance. The tension between the colours generates a subconscious resonance; an eternal play between opposing forces that has been explored through the ages. These dialogues engage us on a deep level, reflecting our inner emotional landscape.
