About this artwork

This drawing of a teapot was made with pencil and watercolor, by an anonymous artist, and is filled with such a sense of calm, I want to take a nap next to it. The use of a limited color palette, soft blues and grays, along with the rendering of light and shadow, makes the metal object look like it’s glowing softly. Look closely at the base of the teapot. See the line of circles along the bottom edge? The artist’s repetition of these shapes and lines feels so soothing. This element makes the entire piece, for me, it is a study of craft as a meditative process. The drawing is a reminder that the simplest of objects, like a teapot, can be a source of beauty and contemplation. It reminds me a bit of Giorgio Morandi, with his quiet still lifes of bottles and jars. Both artists share an ability to find endless interest in everyday objects, celebrating the subtle nuances of light, form, and texture.
