Jean-François Portaels painted this portrait of Aouicha, using oil on canvas. The smooth surface of the painting gives little indication of the textures and skills that went into depicting Aouicha’s clothing and adornments. Notice the straw hat, expertly woven, with colorful woolen embellishments. This kind of hat would have been carefully crafted by skilled artisans, using techniques passed down through generations. The woolen flowers add an element of festivity to the hat. Also, observe the white drapery that partially covers Aouicha’s head and body, likely made from fine cotton or linen, which drapes softly and catches the light, creating subtle gradations of tone. In this painting, Portaels merges his training in academic art with his interest in North African culture. He also offers an insight into the labor, materials, and cultural traditions that underpin the image. By drawing attention to these elements, we gain a deeper appreciation of the artwork as a product of cultural exchange and artistic skill.
