Curatorial notes

Pierre Frédéric Lehnert created "Studies of the Head of a Cow and Two Bucks" in the 19th century using graphite and etching. Lehnert, working in a time when European society was deeply entrenched in agricultural practices and class distinctions, presents us with more than just a study of animals. The detailed focus on the bull's head, juxtaposed with the more relaxed depiction of the goats, subtly underscores the societal values placed on labor, virility, and pastoral life. The bull, an animal of burden, is rendered with intense scrutiny, while the goats seem to embody leisure. One wonders if Lehnert, perhaps unconsciously, reflects the era’s perception of labor versus leisure, or the idealization of rural existence against the backdrop of growing industrialization. These animals, rendered with such care, are not merely creatures but stand-ins within the theater of human concerns. The artwork invites us to contemplate our relationship with the natural world.
