Simon Fokke created this self-portrait sometime in the 18th century using etching. This small print gives us a glimpse into the world of a Dutch artist and engraver during the Enlightenment. Fokke, who lived in Amsterdam, presents himself as a cultivated and intellectual figure. He is surrounded by books and holds a scroll, tools of his trade and symbols of knowledge. The backdrop suggests a connection to nature and classical architecture, alluding to the values of reason and order that defined the Enlightenment. Yet, there is a tension here, a negotiation of identity. Fokke was part of a burgeoning middle class, but he was also operating in a society still structured by rigid social hierarchies. The portrait suggests he is trying to elevate his status through his art and intellect. It embodies a quiet, personal ambition, a desire to be seen and valued in a rapidly changing world.
