Adolf Wölfli made this ink and crayon drawing on paper, probably in the early 20th century. He was clearly working with intense focus, building up layer upon layer of marks to conjure a dense and otherworldly composition. Look at the way the blue ink bleeds slightly around the edges of the central butterfly form. This area contrasts with the tight, controlled patterns filling every corner of the frame, where the writing is rendered with the most exquisite precision. The texture in the blue area is quite different, more fluid and dreamlike. Notice how the radiating lines create a sense of movement. This effect is intensified by the juxtaposition of smooth color fields and granular scribbles. The artist seems to have left some areas blank, and these empty pockets create a spatial push and pull. There's something almost architectural about the overall design, as if Wölfli was imagining a sacred building, a temple perhaps. In a similar vein to Hilma af Klint’s visionary output, Wölfli has created a private cosmology that speaks to us from beyond the boundaries of everyday reality.
