Robert Frank made ‘Convention 3,’ using photography to capture a sense of time, place, and people. Frank wasn't after a glossy finish, he wanted to record something raw. Think of each frame as a brushstroke, building up a story that’s less about the what and more about the how it feels. The grainy blacks and whites, they’re not mistakes, they’re choices. I’m drawn to the lower section of the third row, a figure in shadow, partially obscured, a feeling of disorientation and uncertainty, the feeling of being in the crowd at a political rally. It reminds me of painters like Philip Guston, who also embraced a kind of messy honesty in their work. It’s like Frank is saying, "Here's a piece of the world, not cleaned up, not made pretty, just real." And that’s what makes it stick with you.
