This view of Montfoort Castle was made in 1631 by an anonymous artist, using pen and brown ink, brush in brown and gray, and opaque watercolor. The subtle color variations, achieved with a brush, add depth and atmosphere to the scene. The materiality of paper, along with ink and watercolor, allows for fine detail, visible in the architectural elements and the reflection on the water. Note the precision of the lines, which show the artist's deft hand. The ink flows effortlessly, delineating the form of the castle, a testament to mastery over the materials. There's a quiet intimacy to this work, as it reflects a time when handmade images were more valuable. This wasn't a cheap print; someone took time and care to create it. By focusing on materials, making, and context, we appreciate the artwork on a human scale, challenging distinctions between the fine and decorative arts.
