Stefano della Bella created this small etching, Theseus and Ariadne, as part of his 'Game of Mythology' around the mid-17th century, a time when Europe was solidifying its colonial power. Here, Ariadne is abandoned on the shores of Naxos, left by Theseus after she helped him navigate the labyrinth and defeat the Minotaur. The scene captures the raw emotional betrayal experienced by Ariadne, who gazes out as Theseus sails away. In stories like these, made and circulated during periods of intense colonization, do we see a reflection of colonial exploitation, where trust is gained only to be betrayed? This image invites us to consider the narratives we tell ourselves about power, gender, and loyalty. What does it mean to be left behind, and how do these ancient stories resonate with contemporary experiences of abandonment and betrayal?
