This drawing of A. Grandmont with a book and two women, was made by Bramine Hubrecht using graphite on paper. Hubrecht’s choice of graphite lends itself to quick sketching and shading. The varying pressure she applied creates depth and dimension in the figures, focusing on the light falling on the faces and clothing. The texture of the paper is integral to the artwork. The tooth of the paper grabs the graphite, creating a slightly rough, almost grainy surface that softens the overall appearance. The immediacy of graphite allowed Hubrecht to capture a fleeting moment of quiet companionship. The drawing is imbued with a sense of intimacy and domesticity. This contrasts with the long hours of labor that went into producing more formal academic painting. The accessibility of the medium means the artist does not have to be reliant on external resources and can independently create her own vision. Ultimately, the beauty of this piece lies not only in its composition but also in its embrace of humble materials, and the values of quick and independent production.
