This undated and unsigned textile fragment presents an all-over pattern of red dots and abstract floral motifs on a light ground. What stories might such a humble object tell about the social and economic conditions of its creation? Textile production has a long and complex history, closely tied to global trade, colonialism, and the development of industrial capitalism. Understanding its origins requires us to think about the circulation of raw materials like cotton, the labor systems involved in manufacturing, and the markets where these textiles were sold. This pattern may reflect a specific cultural aesthetic or design tradition; or perhaps it was intended for export, catering to European tastes. The anonymity of the artist is revealing; craftspeople are so often excluded from the traditional narrative of art history, and their skills are overlooked. But by examining trade records, pattern books, and social histories, we can begin to piece together a richer understanding of the world that produced this anonymous, but evocative, sheet.
