This cityscape, made by Florimond Buyck, appears to have been etched with delicate lines, carefully building up tones and textures. I can imagine the artist bent over the plate, scratching away to create this scene. Look at the way Buyck rendered the buildings – there's a real sense of depth. The surface is so worked, creating almost palpable shadows. You can feel the weight of the stone, the way it absorbs light and casts shadows. And then there are the figures – tiny but full of life, frozen in a moment of play. It's like the artist is inviting us to step into their world, to wander the streets and feel the pulse of the city. This piece reminds me that, as artists, we’re always in conversation with each other, borrowing and riffing on each other’s ideas. Every mark we make is a response to something that came before, and a spark for something that will come after.
