Landscape with Poplars
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Paul Cézanne created this landscape with poplars using oil paint on canvas. Cézanne was deeply interested in the materiality of paint itself. Look closely, and you'll notice that he applied each brushstroke deliberately, building up layers of color to create form and depth. This direct, hands-on approach to painting gave him a great sense of control over the final image. The canvas's surface is just as important as the scene depicted. The visible brushstrokes and the varying thickness of the paint create a tactile quality, inviting us to consider the labor involved in creating the artwork. Cézanne's painting process reflects a shift towards recognizing the artist's work as a skilled craft, not just an intellectual pursuit. This emphasis on materials and making challenges traditional distinctions between fine art and craft, inviting us to appreciate the physical and material aspects of art.
