Albertus Verhoesen made this watercolor of a Drum Major of the Civic Guard. The guard was a voluntary militia in the Netherlands, dating back to the Middle Ages. The print gives us insight into the social and political climate of the Netherlands. During the Dutch Golden Age, civic guards protected cities and symbolized civic pride. By the 19th century, their function had largely become ceremonial. This image, therefore, reflects a nostalgia for a time when local militias had a more important role. The uniform is highly detailed and suggests social status. Note the baton, sash, and sword. We need historical context to understand the full meaning of art. Examining archives, historical documents, and other visual sources helps reveal the social and institutional forces behind this image of Dutch civic life.
