This is J. Dearden Holmes’ photograph of the State Capitol in Salt Lake City, Utah. It’s interesting that Holmes, the photographer, has given us a double image. The symmetry creates an immersive visual experience. It's all in shades of grey, light and dark. The photograph is rich in detail, yet also has a timeless quality. There's a softness here, like a memory being recalled. Look closely at the dome and its intricate patterns, notice how Holmes has captured the play of light and shadow? There is something about the repetition of the image which brings to mind other photographs, in particular the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, who documented industrial buildings. However, in contrast to the Becher's, Holmes’ hand feels much more present in the work. Ultimately art is about connection, and the conversation between different artists across time. It invites us to bring our own experiences and interpretations, embracing the beauty of multiple perspectives.
