Curatorial notes

Pieter Schenk created this print of Paleis het Loo using etching and engraving techniques in the late 17th or early 18th century. Schenk, who was of German-Dutch origin, lived during a time when the Netherlands was a major center for printmaking. This image captures not just the architecture of the palace, but also the social life unfolding around it. We see figures strolling, carriages arriving, all set against the backdrop of a meticulously designed fountain. The palace itself, a symbol of power and wealth, invites questions about the lives of those who inhabited it versus those who served it. The geometric precision used in the image conveys an emotional distance, perhaps mirroring the separation between the aristocracy and the common people. While Schenk's print celebrates the grandeur of Paleis het Loo, it also subtly reminds us of the complex social dynamics at play within its shadow.
