Groepsportret van acht kinderen

Curatorial notes
"Groepsportret van acht kinderen" is a very early photograph by E. ten Cate, and it's presented in a stereoscopic format, which gives the image a kind of 3D depth. The sepia tones lend it a feeling of faded memory, like an old postcard from a dream. There is something so lovely in the texture of this image, those grainy details that give it a tangible weight. I'm drawn to the way the dark tones of the surrounding trees contrast with the lighter shades of the children's clothing, really separating them out as the subject of the image. The way the children are arranged on the staircase is so charming too, like a stack of building blocks, all squished together! It’s not just a photograph; it’s a little moment captured, a slice of life from a bygone era. Thinking about artists who explored similar themes, someone like Diane Arbus comes to mind. Both Arbus and ten Cate, in their own way, captured the essence of humanity, the beauty and strangeness of everyday life. Art is just a conversation, isn't it? A back-and-forth across time, always exploring, always questioning.
