Pierre Félix van Doren sketched this drum and other instrument using pen and paper. The drum, a primal instrument, beats at the heart of human experience across cultures. Its circular form and the radiating star at its center resonate deeply. The drum, in various guises, appears across time, from ancient shamanic rituals to modern military marches. In ancient Rome, the tympanum drum accompanied ecstatic rites, connecting rhythm to frenzy, a dance of collective emotion. Similarly, consider the tambourine in Renaissance paintings, often clutched by Bacchantes, symbols of Dionysian ecstasy and the intoxicating liberation from reason. Notice how the circular shape and rhythmic beat of the drum create a cyclical sense of time, and the eight-pointed star motif, a symbol found in Mesopotamian art, representing deities or celestial bodies, suggests a cosmic significance. These elements, deeply ingrained in our collective memory, evoke emotions beyond mere sound. They speak to primal rhythms and our ongoing, evolving relationship with symbols of power, spirituality, and communal expression.
