This small, dark landscape was painted by Edvard Weie, although we don't know exactly when. I love the sombre mood of this painting; it reminds me of all the times I've stood outside in the gloaming. I can almost feel the dampness of the grass in this picture. He must have mixed so many greens and greys to get this effect! It's like a whispered secret on canvas. I wonder what Weie was thinking about when he made it? The houses look so fragile sitting on the hill and the whole scene is held together with thin strokes of the brush. The artist has built up thin layers of paint to create this vision. You can see his working, his trial and error, as if he's trying to hold on to a fleeting moment in time. Painters are always in conversation with one another, aren't they? Looking and borrowing and changing things. And like all great paintings, this one leaves space for us to bring our own experiences and emotions.
