The United States Pottery Company made this vase from molded white porcelain. The material has a crisp, clean feel, which is typical of American porcelain. The surface ornamentation is applied, sprigged on, and uses imagery such as grapes, leaves, and geometric patterns, giving the object its form. Notice the handles, which are almost vestigial. They don't invite you to lift the vase, but they are definitely part of the overall decorative scheme. These vases are slip-cast, and assembled on a factory line. Though not as finely detailed as European examples, the labor and processes of mass production are hidden in the refined appearance of the object. The company was attempting to appeal to consumers who sought affordable luxury items. Looking at this vase, it challenges our assumptions about fine art versus craft, and highlights the importance of considering material and context to fully understand the artwork's meaning.
