Curatorial notes

Henri Fantin-Latour created 'Le Graal. Prélude de Lohengrin' using oil paints on canvas. This work reflects the late 19th-century interest in the mystical and ethereal, using a medium traditionally associated with fine art. However, Fantin-Latour's approach to oil paint sets him apart. Notice the almost hazy application, creating a dreamlike atmosphere. This wasn't about precise representation, but rather evoking a mood. The oil paint is applied in thin layers, allowing light to pass through and reflect off the canvas, giving the painting its luminous quality. Fantin-Latour was deeply inspired by music, particularly Wagner, and this painting seeks to capture the essence of Wagner's opera, Lohengrin. The swirling composition and muted palette create a sense of otherworldly wonder, while the central angel holding the grail becomes a focal point of devotion. By exploring such themes and using his chosen materials in this way, Fantin-Latour challenges the traditional hierarchy between artistic disciplines, elevating musical inspiration to the realm of fine art, and inviting us to appreciate the spiritual through the material.
