Curatorial notes

Here we have "Castle on a Wide River" by Paulus van Liender, an undated drawing rendered in pen, grey ink and brush in grey wash. The drawing is dominated by a large castle to the right, while a vast expanse of water and sky fills the remainder of the composition. Liender masterfully uses the grey wash to create depth and atmosphere. Note how the subtle gradations of tone evoke a sense of tranquility and the passage of time. The texture of the castle walls is delicately rendered, juxtaposing the smoothness of the water. Liender's ability to suggest detail with minimal strokes is evident throughout. The composition is carefully balanced, with the castle anchoring the right side and the boat providing a counterweight on the left. Consider how the formal qualities of the drawing—its lines, tones, and textures—work together to create a sense of place and mood. The drawing invites us to contemplate the relationship between architecture and nature.
