The scene feels almost overwhelming with its stark contrast between light and dark. What catches your eye in terms of form and composition? Curator: The distribution of light certainly structures the image. Notice how MacLaughlan uses a dense network of lines to define the shadowy areas, contrasted with the stark white of the paper left exposed to delineate the mountain peaks. How do you perceive the effect of the linework? Editor: I think the lines, especially the varied textures, really create a sense of depth and ruggedness. There’s this chaotic energy in the marks. They’re not just depicting something, they feel like they embody the raw power of nature. Is this roughness intentionally disrupting conventional landscape portrayal? Curator: Precisely. The formal relationships are intriguing, aren't they? He uses the medium of etching to amplify this quality. The plate allows for very fine detail, yet he chooses to emphasize these rough, almost violent marks, rejecting a smooth, picturesque ideal. The materiality contributes significantly to the overall impression. Editor: So, by emphasizing texture and form over strict representation, MacLaughlan elevates the emotional impact of the landscape itself. I’m also now drawn to the upper right-hand side where he etches vertical marks almost mimicking rain or waterfalls that frame the central form in this dark ominous glow.
