This pencil sketch, titled 'Maandblad Verf en Kunst van P.A. Regnault', was designed by Leo Gestel. It's all about line, right? And what a line can do. The figures emerge tentatively from the page, as if we are witness to a thought in the process of taking shape. See how the lines describing the figure to the right are a flurry, a cloud? This gives a real sense of movement, of the eye and the hand working together to find form. I love the confidence of the lines defining the first figure, and how these contrast with the energetic scribbles elsewhere. It makes me think about how a really minimal gesture can carry just as much weight as an accumulation of marks. Gestel reminds us that art doesn't need to be overworked to be powerful. It's all about the conversation, the call and response between artist and artwork.
