Roy Weber made this drawing of a roasting stand with drip pan at some point in his life, probably with graphite and colored pencil. You can see the hand of the artist so clearly, these soft smudgy marks. I love the way the legs of the stand splay out, drawn with just a few lines, sort of tentative and wobbly. The whole thing has this awkward, almost comical feel. It’s like Weber is showing us not just the object, but also his own process of trying to capture it. There is something so honest about that. Looking at this drawing I think of Maira Kalman, who does these kind of whimsical renderings of everyday objects. Both artists have this lightness of touch. It’s a reminder that art doesn’t always have to be so serious. Sometimes, it can just be about looking at the world with a bit of humor and curiosity.
