Armand Rassenfosse made this print of a dancing woman sometime between 1862 and 1934. It looks to me like he was making it up as he went along. The lines are so tentative! Look at the bottom left: there's this dark smudge, but the rest of the print is so light. Her face is barely there. She's holding what looks like a drape, and her body is sort of revealed but also sort of not. Nothing is set in stone. It’s like he's searching for something, letting the image emerge from the ground. This reminds me of Redon's dreamy drawings. There's a similar ambiguity. Rassenfosse isn't trying to nail anything down. It's all about the process of seeing, of feeling, of letting the world come to you in its own strange way. It’s not a definitive statement, more of a question. And that's what makes it so interesting.
