Harald Slott-Møller painted this portrait of Georg Brandes at the University of Copenhagen, immortalizing the critic and scholar within the halls of academia. Notice how the artificial light illuminates Brandes, casting him against a dark backdrop as he rests behind the podium. This recalls the visual trope of philosophers, orators, and playwrights from antiquity whose wisdom shone brightly even in the darkest of times. Yet, this image isn't just about enlightenment. It's about the individual confronting the unknown, a concept that has echoed through art for centuries. Consider, for instance, the recurring motif of a single figure against a vast, dark background. This image can stir deep-seated fears of isolation and uncertainty. The motif of the lone figure thus taps into our collective unconscious, resonating with universal anxieties about existence and the search for meaning. These anxieties are embedded in cultural memory. Ultimately, this image of Georg Brandes, bathed in light yet framed by darkness, reminds us that the quest for knowledge is both an illumination and a confrontation with the unknown, ever-present.
Georg Brandes (1842¬–1927) was the absolute leading Dan-ish literary critic around 1900. His lecture series “Main movements within 19th c. liter-ature”, launched in 1871, was seminal. He called on artists to address their own time – to “put issues up for discussion.” Several writers and a few painters did so. A new social awareness emerged among artists. An admirer of Brandes, Harald Slott-Møller did not paint him as he looked in 1889, but as a young critic giving lectures in 1871. Brandes was regarded as the key figure of the Cultural Radicalism movement and had many followers, but also attracted vicious attacks, sometimes of an anti-Semitic nature. He continues to divide opinions today. He became in-ternationally acclaimed in his own day, and his death in 1927 was front page news in the world press.
