This is Emil Wolff's watercolor drawing, "Design for a Chimney Piece Decorated with Figures of Venus and Cupid." The drawing presents a symmetrical construction, a carefully balanced arrangement of figurative and decorative elements, evoking a sense of classical order. At the centre we see the figures of Venus and Cupid, framed by the arch of a shell and two dolphins. The design is flanked by figures of Venus and Cupid standing atop of plinths. The space inside the mantelpiece is an undifferentiated expanse of grey wash. Wolff has created a complex interplay of forms, lines and colors that come together to create an impressive whole. The texture of the watercolour suggests a soft, diffused light, which brings out the fine details of the figures and decorative elements. The overall effect is one of refined elegance. However, the rigid symmetry of the design, the figures and the precise execution destabilize traditional notions of beauty and harmony. Instead, the design becomes an exercise in representation, highlighting the artifice inherent in aesthetic creations. It's a design which encourages us to question the very nature of design.
