Rasmus Christiansen made this drawing, I markedsteltet, with pencil on paper. It’s all about the hatching! Look at those tiny lines, all working together to create shadows and shapes. It’s like he’s building the whole scene with these little marks, and that’s exactly what drawing is, a process of discovery. The surface is really worked, dense areas of shadow contrasted with the stark white of the paper. I’m drawn to the way he renders the faces, these quick, almost scribbled lines that somehow capture so much personality. Check out the guy in the foreground with his pipe; the weight of the hand holding it and the shape of the mouth. This drawing reminds me a little of Honoré Daumier, both in the subject matter and the way they use line to create form. Art is an ongoing conversation, right? We’re all just riffing off each other, trying to make sense of the world in our own way.
