This is Cornelis Brouwer's drawing *Liggende hond*, or "Reclining Dog," held at the Rijksmuseum. Executed in delicate lines of graphite and touches of red chalk, it depicts a dog resting on a patterned surface, perhaps a cushion or rug, beside a wooden structure. The composition, though simple, invites contemplation on texture and form. Notice how the light, feathery strokes suggest the softness of the dog's fur, contrasting with the more rigid, angular lines that define the adjacent wooden structure. Brouwer’s strategic use of line and shading not only gives shape to the animal but also conveys a sense of weight and presence. The sparse application of red chalk draws attention to particular areas, adding depth and warmth to the otherwise muted palette. The grid-like pattern beneath the drawing hints at a structured surface, a foundation upon which Brouwer builds his fleeting, yet evocative image. This formal arrangement highlights the interplay between spontaneity and deliberate composition, inviting us to consider the deeper structures underpinning everyday scenes.
