Jean Degottex made "Levez le doigt et tout l'univers est là" (Raise your finger and the whole universe is there) with a minimalist palette of black and white, punctuated by a very subtle touch of pale yellow. I imagine the artwork came into being through a series of intuitive gestures. Degottex probably had a deep reverence for the act of creation itself. He might have been thinking about the interconnectedness of all things. The thinness of the paint allows the canvas to breathe, emphasizing the gestural marks. That long, vertical stroke—it feels like a moment of focused energy, a release of pent-up emotion. It reminds me of Franz Kline, but there’s also something uniquely Degottex about its quiet intensity. Artists are in an ongoing conversation, aren't they? They're constantly building on each other's ideas, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Ultimately, painting is all about embracing ambiguity, allowing for multiple interpretations and meanings.
