Editor: Here we have Giulio Campagnola's "Old Shepherd," an etching from the early 16th century, currently residing at the Harvard Art Museums. It has such a peaceful, almost sleepy air about it. What do you make of this bucolic scene? Curator: It's fascinating, isn't it? The pastoral ideal, so central to Renaissance thought, is turned on its head. Look at the shepherd – seemingly more interested in a nap than tending his flock! It’s a very personal and almost humorous take on the theme, wouldn't you say? Editor: I see what you mean! It's less idyllic and more... relatable? Curator: Exactly! Perhaps Campagnola is suggesting that even in paradise, there's always room for a little rest. Editor: That's a great point. I had been focused on the setting, but now I’m intrigued by that shepherd's choice to doze!
