Curatorial notes
This is "Letter O met een oog (Oculus)," a diminutive engraving by Claude Mellan, crafted with meticulous detail. The eye, centered within a perfect circle, immediately captures our attention. Mellan employs a technique that emphasizes line and form to create a striking image. The lines emanating from behind the eye perhaps signify enlightenment. This central motif is framed by an ornate border of geometric shapes, contrasting curves and sharp angles, adding a layer of complexity to the composition. The Oculus or ‘eye’ motif carries symbolic weight, traditionally representing surveillance, knowledge and insight. Mellan uses the interplay of circular and linear elements to explore themes of perspective and perception. The engraving invites reflection on what it means to observe and be observed, and to be conscious of the gaze.
