Curatorial notes

Konstantinos Maleas’s landscape of the Messolonghi Lagoon employs a structural arrangement of horizontal bands layered with rhythmic brushstrokes. The colour palette, primarily muted ochres, blues, and peaches, creates a tranquil, contemplative mood. The composition's foreground is dominated by textured strokes of earth tones, suggesting a tactile, almost palpable, sense of the land. Moving towards the middle ground, the lagoon presents a serene, reflective surface, mirroring the structures and sky above. The buildings in the distance, rendered with simple geometric forms, anchor the scene, providing a focal point amidst the expansive landscape. Maleas’s use of Impressionistic techniques softens the boundaries between objects, focusing instead on the interplay of light and colour. The painting's overall structure invites a semiotic reading: the earth, water, and sky operate as signs, each contributing to a larger narrative of place and identity. The painting destabilizes traditional landscape conventions, moving away from detailed representation towards an expression of subjective experience.
