Franz Krüger sketched this study of a uniformed man in the 19th century, using graphite on paper. Notice how Krüger's skilled manipulation of the graphite pencil coveys the weight and drape of the uniform fabric. With the subtlest of marks, he creates a palpable sense of volume and texture, giving us an insight into the labor and materials involved in producing such garments. Military uniforms, then as now, require complex tailoring. The status of the wearer is reflected in every stitch. This is a world of bespoke craft, made at human scale, in contrast to the industrial looms and garment factories that would soon come to dominate textile production. By focusing on the material and process of making, we can understand the wider cultural significance of this drawing. Krüger’s focus on the uniform is not just about aesthetic representation, it is a glimpse into the relationship between art, craft, and the social structures of his time.
