This piece is an untitled sculpture by Jessica Stockholder, who was born in 1959. It’s made from everyday objects, combined with an intuitive eye. Stockholder's work is all about process. She seems to be thinking out loud with materials, like an abstract painter uses color and form. There's a red plastic laundry basket, stacked on another, with a white pillow caught in between, and painted with green areas. It's the physicality of it all, the textures and colors, that grab you. The translucence of the red plastic interacts with the dense green and soft, white pillow, creating an emotional experience that is both familiar and strange. It reminds me of Kurt Schwitters' Merzbau, where found objects were transformed into immersive environments. Art's an ongoing conversation and Stockholder continues to push the boundaries of what sculpture can be. There is no one right answer, it's more about embracing ambiguity and multiple interpretations.
