Dirck Dircksz. van Santvoort painted this portrait of Machteld Bas on canvas, likely in the 1660s or 70s. Immediately, one is struck by the geometry and composition of this painting. Machteld is centrally located, framed by the dark vertical folds of a curtain and the light grey balustrade. Santvoort’s skillful use of light and shadow gives depth and dimension to the dark dress, which is sharply contrasted by the white lace collar and cuffs. The black-and-white structure of the portrait is softened by the landscape background and her pale skin. The restrained palette and formal pose reflect the values of Dutch Calvinist society, emphasizing order, balance, and the material wealth of its subjects. Yet, the painting also suggests the complex interplay between public image and private identity through symbolic objects such as the fan and jewelry, which reflect Machteld’s status and personality. The composition and structure invite contemplation on the layers of meaning behind this image.
